About this calculation

What counts as money you have left

Flexible money only: what is still unspent once rent, bills, debt payments and the amount you are saving this month are out of the picture. Your account balance is not the same thing — it is still holding money that is already promised to something else.

How the calculation works

The price comes off what you have left, and the remainder is divided by the days still to come to give a per-day figure before and after. That second figure is usually the more useful one: it is what the rest of the month feels like if you go ahead.

Fits is not the same as worth it

This page can tell you whether one number is smaller than another. It cannot tell you whether something is worth buying, whether you will want the money for something else in two weeks, or what it does to next month. Those are yours to weigh.

One purchase at a time

The figures assume this is the only thing you are adding. If you are weighing up two or three, add them together and put the total in — otherwise each looks affordable on its own and the three of them together are not.

This calculator is a budgeting tool, not financial advice. It describes the numbers you entered and nothing else — no figure it shows is a recommendation about what you should spend.

Knowing the number before you are in the shop

The answer to this question depends entirely on a figure most people do not have to hand. PAY/ATTN keeps it: a limit per category set before the month starts, and what is left against it updated as you log what you spend.
